History

1973	DAC, Inc. has been providing services to individuals with disabilities since 1973, when it was first incorporated under the name of Jackson County Developmental Activity Center.
1986	Officially changed name to DAC, Inc. in March 1986. The agency at that time provided services to 25 individuals. At the present time, DAC serves approximately 205 individuals in several different programs and employs around 225 dedicated staff.
1987	A home was purchased in Bellevue and was operated as a licensed Residential Care Facility for the Intellectually Disabled (RCF/ID). In the early ‘90s the RCF/ID status was lifted, and DAC began serving individuals in the home through the Home and Community Based Waiver (HCBS) and in 2002 a separate 2-bedroom apartment was constructed in the basement.
1989	In 1989 DAC was able to construct a 12-bed Intermediate Care Facility for the Intellectually Disabled (ICF/ID), known as Prairie House, which opened its doors in January of 1990.
1990	DAC purchased the old “Chessline Building” and converted it into a recycling building, in which all recycling was done for the Jackson County area. A lot of equipment was purchased over the years with the help of donations from the Maquoketa Area Foundation and the Jackson County Landfill Agency, as well as grants through the Department of Natural Resources and help from the local community.
1992	A new building was completed next to the recycling center and DAC moved its administration and vocational services into that site, where it still remains today.
1993	In the early ‘90s a home was donated by Oscar and Camilla Skott, and one of the individuals served by DAC moved into the home in March of 1993. The home has since been sold and the proceeds used to purchase a newer home to allow living space to more individuals with disabilities.
1995	In May of 1995, a duplex in Maquoketa (dedicated to the memory of Fr. Bill McLaughlin) was opened in Maquoketa. It currently houses 8 individuals.
1996	Another Duplex was constructed and opened in Preston and currently houses 8 individuals. Since that time, several other homes have been purchased in Maquoketa and are rented to individuals with disabilities to enable them to live as independently as possible. DAC, Inc. purchased a for-profit injection molding plastics company (ITW-Fastex) which is now called A-DAC Industries, Inc. This purchase enabled DAC to have a viable option for an “enclave” of workers to become part of a competitive work force.
2005	In the summer of 2005 DAC started Day Habilitation Services at its vocational center, which eventually outgrew the space. They now serve 32 individuals in a leased facility in the community. This service offers individuals opportunities to participate in community activities, as well as learning skills such as cooking, safety, etc. DAC also began offering Representative Payee services, and now provides this service to 36 individuals.
2006	In June 2006, DAC took over management of the Julien Care Facility in Dubuque.
2008	DAC purchased a second home in Bellevue. An addition was made to the administration building to include 5 additional offices and a conference/training room.
2009	DAC purchased Briarwood Nursing Home and converted it to a 4-bedroom site. In July 2009, DAC expanded their Home & Community Based Services by adding 2 homes in the Dubuque area.
2010 to Present	DAC continues to grow and expand their Home & Community Based Services with the purchase of a 3rd home in Dubuque and has begun offering 24-hour and hourly residential services in the Clinton and DeWitt areas. A new site (Aldi’s building) has been purchase to accommodate the growth of Day Habilitation services in Maquoketa. DAC purchased another home in Dubuque, one in Clinton and one in DeWitt, as well as opening a satellite office in DeWitt. DAC started offering Home Health Services.
